Blokees and Bandai Gunpla are both snap-fit model kits, but they build very differently. Here is how they compare and which one to start with.

Blokees Evangelion Action Edition EVA-02 model kit

Blokees and Bandai Gunpla are both model kits: pre-coloured plastic parts that snap together into a poseable figure, without glue or paint. So which one should you buy? It depends on how long you want to build, whether you want to use tools, and which characters you love. As the official Blokees distributor for the Netherlands and a Gunpla stockist, we compare the two side by side.

How Blokees kits build

Blokees kits are designed to be built without any tools. The parts are pre-coloured, the instructions are illustrated step by step, and most kits are finished in one sitting. The result is a fully poseable figure with joints, a stand and, depending on the kit, swappable hands or weapons. The lines go from compact Classic Class and Champion Class kits to the larger Action Edition figures. Read more in What is Blokees? and our Blokees Transformers guide.

How Gunpla build

Gunpla come in grades: SD and Entry Grade for quick builds, High Grade (HG) as the classic 1/144 choice, Real Grade (RG) for fine detail at the same scale and Master Grade (MG) for bigger 1/100 kits with an inner frame. The parts sit on runners, so a pair of model nippers gives clean results. Higher grades take longer and reward patience. Our Gunpla grades explained and Gundam buying guide go deeper.

Which one should you choose?

  • You want a quick, tool-free build or a gift: Blokees.
  • You love a specific franchise: pick the brand that has it. Transformers, Marvel or Evangelion means Blokees; Gundam means Gunpla.
  • You enjoy a longer, more technical build: Gunpla, from High Grade upwards.
  • Building with a child: both work. Blokees needs no tools; with Gunpla, an Entry Grade kit also goes together by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Are Blokees and Gunpla the same thing?

No. Both are snap-fit model kits, but Blokees is a separate brand with its own licences and a tool-free design, while Gunpla are Bandai's Gundam kits sold in grades.

Do I need glue or paint?

Neither needs glue or paint. Parts are colour-moulded. For Gunpla, nippers are recommended for a clean finish.

Which is easier for beginners?

A Blokees Classic Class or Champion Class kit, or a Gunpla Entry Grade or SD kit. All of these are finished in one evening.
