Who makes AREA-X?

AREA-X is a brand of Sembo, a building-block company from Shantou in China. AREA-X focuses on big, eye-catching models based on well-known licences. Its Yu-Gi-Oh! sets are officially licensed.

Sembo also makes the small Digimon Adventure figures and the Wonder Moon brick flower sets. Read more in our guides to Sembo and Wonder Moon.

The AREA-X sets we carry

Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Magician (AB0040)

Yugi Muto's famous spellcaster, built from 1,209 pieces. The finished model measures about 33.4 × 27.9 × 36.1 cm, so it makes a striking centrepiece next to your deck box. Five built-in lighting elements light up the magician and his staff, there are interchangeable hands, and an opening magic book doubles as storage for the spare hand parts. A metal card and a display nameplate are included too.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Blue-Eyes White Dragon (AB0004)

One of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s best-known monsters, built from about 1,250 pieces, with big sculpted wings and blue eyes. You can position the wings, tail, head and jaw for different poses, and LED lighting in the base adds a glow under the dragon. It is a large model, about 51 cm wide and 38 cm tall when finished.

SpongeBob SquarePants Pineapple House (AB0032)

The biggest AREA-X set we carry, with 2,313 pieces. SpongeBob's home opens up to show a furnished interior, and when you turn the rock on the side of the platform, a gear system slowly rotates the house. There are two lighting systems: a rechargeable module with five transparent LED elements that light up the rooms, and an illuminated arrow sign that runs on three AG13 button cells. Six character figures and Gary the snail are included, so you can play out your own Bikini Bottom scenes.

Why AREA-X sets are fun to build

AREA-X sets turn characters you know from the screen or the card table into something you can build with your own hands. The Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon are a natural fit for Yu-Gi-Oh! players: build one, switch on the lights, and it becomes the star of your games room. The SpongeBob Pineapple House is more of a playset, with an interior to explore, a moving mechanism and figures to place around it.

These are big builds with lots of detail, which is why they are rated 14+. They work well as a long weekend project, or as a build to share with a teenager who loves the show or the game.

Is AREA-X right for you?

  • Yes, if you love Yu-Gi-Oh! or SpongeBob and want a large, lit-up display piece.
  • Yes, if you enjoy long builds with moving parts and lights.
  • Maybe not, if you are buying for a younger child: look at smaller character builds such as Keeppley's Pokémon sets or Sembo's Digimon figures instead.
