Who makes Mould King?

Mould King started in 2012 in Chenghai, a district of Shantou that is one of China's biggest toy-making centres. The brand made its name with technical sets: models with motors, remote control and app control that you build yourself and then drive. Alongside those, Mould King also make display sets such as cars, animals and music boxes.

What do Mould King make?

A motorised train you can drive

The 12027S SD40-2 Diesel Locomotive from Mould King's World Railway series is the star of our range. You build the locomotive, a container wagon and a crane on a truck platform for loading the container, from 1,257 pieces. A power module drives the locomotive, which you control by remote or by app, and the set includes an oval of track of about 117 × 71 cm, more than 3 metres of rails. It is a build and a toy in one.

Classic cars

The 10006 1964 Classic Convertible (1,096 pieces, 8+) has opening doors, bonnet and boot, with a spare wheel in the boot. The 10236 XK140 OTS Sports Car (1,302 pieces) is a more detailed build of about 36 cm long and is rated 14+.

Light-up music boxes

Four music boxes, each about 405 to 432 pieces: a glowing jellyfish over a coral garden, a clownfish on a reef, a blue butterfly over pink flowers, and a bee on a daisy. Each sits on a wind-up music box base, has built-in LED lighting and comes with a clear dust cover to keep it looking good.

Birds and sea life

The 10150 Black-Capped Lory shows two birds on a curving branch, built from 1,052 pieces and about 28.5 cm tall. From the Fantastic Nature line, the 10172 Sea Turtle and 10174 Squid are compact reef scenes of around 410 pieces at €9.95, a great first Mould King set.

Why Mould King sets are fun to build

The locomotive is the obvious highlight: there is nothing quite like building a train yourself and then sending it round the track with a remote. It is a lovely project to do together, with one person building the locomotive and another the crane platform.

The music boxes are the opposite kind of fun: a calm build of a few hundred pieces, and then you wind it up, switch on the light and listen. They make thoughtful gifts. The cars sit in the middle, with opening parts that reward careful building.

Which Mould King set should I choose?

  • A first set: the 10172 Sea Turtle or 10174 Squid at €9.95.
  • A gift: one of the music boxes at €19.95.
  • Car fans: the 1964 Classic Convertible (8+) or the XK140 (14+).
  • Something that moves: the 12027S SD40-2 locomotive.

If you like moving models, MJI's motorised mechanical animals are worth a look too, and DK make large static locomotives such as the Big Boy.
