Balody is a micro-block brand from Chenghai in Shantou, China, made by Shantou Liangao Toy Industry. Its tiny bricks build surprisingly big, detailed models: a 1,530-piece T-Rex, an officially licensed Doraemon, a floating astronaut with a glowing visor, and an Eiffel Tower covered in red roses.

This guide explains how Balody micro blocks work, what we stock, which set suits which builder, and some tips for your first micro-block build.

Who makes Balody?

Balody is the micro-block brand of Shantou Liangao Toy Industry, a toy maker based in Chenghai, a district of Shantou that is one of China's biggest toy-making centres. Balody's speciality is detailed models built from very small bricks, from animals and characters to famous landmarks.

What are micro blocks?

Micro blocks click together like ordinary bricks, but each piece is tiny. That is why a Balody T-Rex needs 1,530 pieces but is still only about 28 cm long: the small bricks let curves, teeth and claws come out in fine detail. Micro blocks are a different size from standard bricks, so they do not combine with LEGO or other standard sets.

For the full picture on brick sizes, see our introduction to microbricks and our comparison of microbricks, ribblebricks and standard bricks.

The Balody sets we stock

Doraemon

The officially licensed 16131 Doraemon (886 pieces) shows the blue robot cat sitting with a big open-mouthed smile, his red nose, white belly pocket and golden bell. He stands about 12 cm tall: a cheerful desk companion for fans of the anime.

Dinosaurs

From the Dinosaur Jurassic Period series, the 16088 T-Rex (1,530 pieces) is a grey Tyrannosaurus in a striding pose with its jaws wide open, about 28 cm long. The 16089 Velociraptor (1,457 pieces) is bright green with darker markings and its famous sickle claws, about 19.5 cm tall. Both are €14.95, which is a lot of build for the price.

Eiffel Tower with Roses

The 16409 Eiffel Tower with Roses is the biggest Balody set we stock: 2,551 pieces build the tower in grey, overgrown with climbing red roses from base to top, about 37 cm tall. A romantic gift for someone who loves Paris.

Floating Astronaut

The 18361 Floating Astronaut (745 pieces) floats above a small round planet with one arm stretched out, about 15 cm tall. His helmet visor has a built-in LED light that glows when you connect it with a USB cable, which makes a lovely night light on a desk or bedside table.

Why Balody sets are fun to build

Micro blocks are a calm, absorbing kind of build. You add one tiny brick after another and slowly watch a dinosaur, a robot cat or a tower appear. Balody sets give you a long build for a low price, so they are perfect for screen-free evenings, holidays or a quiet weekend afternoon.

They are also great to build together: one person reads the instructions and finds the pieces, the other builds, then you swap. Tips for your first micro-block set: build on a tray so pieces do not roll away, sort the colours before you start, and press each piece down firmly.

Which Balody set should I choose?

  • A first micro-block build: the 18361 Floating Astronaut at €9.95.
  • Dinosaur fans: the T-Rex or the Velociraptor.
  • Anime fans: the Doraemon.
  • The big project: the Eiffel Tower with Roses.
